Background: Hantaviruses remain an important case of emerging and re-emerging infections in human medicine. This study aimed to analyse the epidemiology, clinical presentation, outcome hantavirus western part Republic Croatia, a new geographical area for infections. Methods: Retrospective analysis medical records patients treated hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) at infectious diseases Clinic Clinical Hospital Center Rijeka, from 1 January 2014, 31 December 2021. Results: During eight-year period, 251 were hospitalized HFRS, epidemic outbreaks years 2014 Most had typical course HFRS received supportive care. Serological revealed Puumala Virus (PUUV) as predominant etiology disease. Epidemiological clustering region Gorski Kotar spread on Mediterranean coast (Adriatic Sea), which was previously considered free Conclusions: The presented results indicate Croatia central low-lying parts country tourist-attractive adjacent coast,

Dear Editor, Hantaviruses are enveloped negative stranded RNA viruses (family Bunyaviridae, genus Hantavirus) transmitted to humans via aerosols or direct contact from inapparent infection from rodents of the Muridae and Cricetidae families. Two distinct clinical forms are recognised: haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS), a severe acute febrile illness with renal and hepatic dysfunctio...
متن کاملEmerging infections: haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome and hantavirus cardiopulmonary syndrome
Hantaviruses form a genus within the Bunyaviridae family and have a world-wide distribution. These negative stranded RNA viruses may be the cause of two different types of disease in humans: Haemorrhagic Fever with Renal Syndrome (HFRS) in Eurasia and Hantavirus (Cardio) Pulmonary Syndrome (HCPS), the latter seen mainly in North and South America. Here we will discuss important aspects of hanta...

BACKGROUND Previous studies indicate that smoking affects the outcome of some infections and is a risk factor for Puumala virus (PUUV) infection. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of smoking on the clinical severity of PUUV infection and the prevalence of smoking in patients with PUUV infection. METHODS A questionnaire on smoking habits was sent to 494 patients in 2012, who had b...

متن کاملHemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome and coexisting hantavirus pulmonary syndrome
Hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) is an acute viral disease with fever, hemorrhage and renal failure caused by hantavirus infection. Hantavirus induces HFRS or hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS). HPS progression to a life-threatening pulmonary disease is found primarily in the USA and very rarely in South Korea. Here, we report a case of HFRS and coexisting HPS.
